What is microchipping?

A microchip is a small device, about the size of a grain of rice, that is injected under the animal’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique 15-digit number that is read with a scanner. The chip does not contain GPS and does not act as a locator - it stores an identification number linked to the owner’s contact information in a database. The procedure takes a few seconds and is no more painful than a regular injection; no anesthesia is required.

Why chip your pet?

Finding a lost pet

If a chipped animal is found, any clinic or shelter can read the chip and find the owner through the LDC database. Unlike a collar or tag, a chip cannot be lost or removed.

Legal requirement

Dog chipping and registration is mandatory in Latvia. It helps ensure animal accounting and promotes responsible pet ownership.

Traveling with a pet

A microchip is a prerequisite for obtaining an EU pet passport and traveling with a pet outside of Latvia.

Is microchipping mandatory?

Yes. In Latvia, dog chipping and registration has been mandatory since 2017 - all dogs must be microchipped and registered in the Agricultural Data Center (LDC) database.
From July 1, 2024, chipping and registration is also mandatory for cats. The animal must be microchipped by four months of age. For cats born before June 30, 2024, chipping and registration must be completed by June 30, 2027. Certain exceptions are specified in the Cabinet of Ministers regulations.
Chipping and registration is also mandatory if you plan to travel with your pet outside of Latvia.

How does the procedure work?

The veterinarian injects the chip under the skin - it only takes a few seconds. Afterward, the animal is registered in the LDC database, linking the chip number to the owner’s contact information. If necessary, we also issue a vaccination certificate and an EU pet passport for travel. Important: if you change your place of residence or contact information, the data in the LDC database must be updated for the chip to remain useful.
