What is the difference between spaying and neutering?

Spaying

This is a surgery for female dogs/cats where the ovaries and uterus are removed (OVHE).

Neutering

This is a surgery for male cats/dogs where the testicles are removed. Both operations are performed under general anesthesia and are a routine, safe veterinary practice.

Why spay or neuter your pet?

Health Benefits

For females: prevents pyometra (uterine infection) - a life-threatening condition, and significantly reduces the risk of mammary gland tumors if the surgery is performed in a timely manner.

For males: prevents testicular tumors and reduces the risk of prostate-related problems.

Behavior

Neutered males usually roam less, mark territory less, and show less aggression towards other animals. Spayed females no longer experience heat cycles.

However, castration is not a universal solution to every behavior problem. If you are considering it for behavioral reasons, read how chemical castration can help assess this first.

Unwanted Pregnancy

The surgery completely prevents unwanted pregnancies.

When is the best time for the surgery?

The optimal age depends on the animal’s species, breed, and size. For cats and small breed dogs, surgery can usually be performed from about 6 months of age; for large breed dogs, it is sometimes recommended to wait longer. The most accurate recommendation will be given by a veterinarian after examining the animal - we invite you to schedule a consultation.

How is the surgery performed?

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Both injectable and safer inhalation (gas) anesthesia are available at the clinic, allowing for more precise control of anesthetic depth. Before the surgery, the veterinarian assesses the animal’s health. In most cases, the animal can go home on the day of the surgery.

  • We use absorbable sutures to reduce stress for the animal during follow-up clinic visits.
  • The veterinarian may prescribe painkillers or antibiotics. You will receive all individual instructions after the surgery.
